shots, I decided to forgo it for myself and kiddos. We didn't get one this year either. But there's something different about this year...I've discovered essential oils!
I originally delved into EOs (essential oils) as a way to scent natural cleaners...no one likes the smell of straight vinegar! I didn't have many recipes, so I looked on Pinterest and started following blogs that had DIY cleaner recipes on them. All of a sudden, a couple of those blogs started posting about being able to use EOs for more than just cleaning. One such blog post said you could ingest them to get rid of congestion due to allergies, among other things. HOLY COW! I was amazed and intrigued. The recipe was called DIY LLP, and since I had lemon, lavender, and peppermint (the three oils necessary for the blend) on hand, I mixed up my first "shot" of L.L.P., took it, and found immediate relief. And the best part?? Zero side effects. I kid you not. Try that with an OTC (or even Rx) allergy medication.
Once I knew that L.L.P. worked, I kept reading about and researching EOs, but more in-depth. I bought a couple roller bottles and started blending up other essential oil recipes for different things - a cold blend to help the kiddos breathe when they had congestion was one of the first "recipes" I tried. And I use it to this day...the kids let me know when they need it, and I just rub some on their chest or feet. :)
One of the most impressive recipes I've tried so far is the DIY Shield recipe. The blend itself is also sold pre-blended and goes by other names, depending on which company your EOs come from. A few of the names are: Thieves, Four Thieves, Shield, and OnGuard. The history of this blend goes way back to the plagues in Europe. Grave robbers protected themselves with the oil blend, and therefore didn’t get sick after robbing the graves of those who had died from the plague. Hence, the name Thieves or Four Thieves blend.
What I do with Shield is mix it half-and-half with FCO (fractionated coconut oil) in a 10ml roller bottle and roll it on the bottoms of our feet and massage it in morning and night, Monday - Friday. What this does is build our immune systems to help battle off any "bugs" we may come into contact with.
If one of us happens to get sick, I just add a couple more ingredients (oregano and melaleuca) to the basic DIY Shield recipe, and have what's affectionately known as the "cold/flu bomb". For the kiddos, this is mixed 50/50 with FCO in a roller bottle and rolled on the bottoms of their feet and along the spine until the sickness subsides. For myself, if I have time, I put a three (3) drops each of shield, oregano, and melaleuca (aka Tea Tree) into a shot of water, hold my nose, and drink it. Otherwise, I used the roll-on. If my throat is sore, I gargle before I swallow, and that sore throat is G-O-N-E gone.
If you’re interested in trying Shield and/or the Cold/Flu Bomb, check out the Cold/Flu Bomb Kit from Spark Naturals. It comes with a 5 ml version of Shield, Oregano, and Melaleuca EOs along with a roller bottle, and is packaged in a tin to make it easy to take with you. I carry mine with me everywhere!
